Woman docked over alleged N1.23m fraud

A 40-year-old woman, Stella Godwin, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N1.23 million fraud.

Godwin, who resides at Old Kamazo, Kaduna, is being charged with fraud, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between January and August in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna.

Leo said that Godwin, a staff member of Grace Multi Dynamic Investment Limited, fraudulently converted the sum of N1.23 million belonging to her employer to her personal use.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 241 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State.

She said the section of the law prescribed a five-year jail term for anyone found guilty.

Leo further urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble witnesses.

Counsel to the defendant, Samson Timothy, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising that the defendant will not jump bail.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should present evidence of three years of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case until Oct. 9, for hearing.(NAN)
