The Child and Youth Protection Foundation (CYPF) has appealed to the Federal Government to continue to support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and shelve its plans to regulate them.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the National Coordinator of CYPF, Mr. Kolawole Olatosimi, gave the advice on Tuesday while commemorating 2024 World NGO Day.
NAN reports that World NGO Day is celebrated every year on Feb. 27 to honour and appreciate the important work done by NGOs.
Its theme is “Building a Sustainable Future: The Role of NGOs in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Olatosimi said regulating the NGOs’ activities would deprive them of their independence.
According to him, NGOs have always partnered with governments at all levels to ensure that citizens receive the benefits of democracy.
“NGOs contribute significantly to the betterment of humanity by sending a child to school and giving them a chance at a brighter future, thereby showcasing the power of collective action in creating positive impact and driving meaningful change.
“NGOs around the world work tirelessly to bring about positive and lasting changes in communities.
“Their dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment make them unsung heroes in the pursuit of a better world,” Olatosimi said.
He said the day serves as an annual celebration honouring the impactful contributions of NGOs globally.
“The Day aims to celebrate all NGOs working in all communities in Nigeria to ensure they achieve the SDG goals, in spite various challenges bedeviling them in their commitment to uplift humanity
“As we navigate complex challenges, the focus on SDG’s becomes increasingly vital, recognising the proactive efforts of NGOs in addressing key issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental conservation.
“These organisations often rely on financial support to carry out their essential tasks. In the modern era, the internet and social media have become powerful tools for NGOs to connect with a global audience.
”CYPF celebrates all of you, and for the ones we are partnering with, we do not in any way take you for granted, and we believe that together we will achieve more,” Olatosimi said. (NAN)
