Nigerian youths were at the weekend warned to refrain from getting involved in post-election violence in the guise of supporting one candidate or the other in the just-concluded presidential/National assembly elections.
Edo state Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Patriot Mutairu Habib Odion, told reporters that the call has become necessary so that the Nigerian youth can look beyond the peanuts offered them as party thugs to forment trouble.
He said though many politicians are aware that INEC has put in place all humanly possible mean for a credible poll they are ready to finance violent reactions when results are not in their favor.
“We are of the view that the need to keep Nigeria as an indivisible united nation is indisputable and that is why we have been working hard on sensitising our youths to be active in creating the conducive political atmosphere for the conduct of a non-violent peaceful, free and fair General Elections”.
Odion said that Edo state command of the corps has been a leading light for the organisation nationwide with its sensitization campaign designed to engage youths in development programmes and projects that add value to society rather than those destroy it.
He said this has been through impacting the ethics and spirit of Peace Building, Disarmament, Conflict Resolution through Citizenship and Leadership Training, Patriotic education and re- orientation, hinged on the bed rock of strict discipline in various parts of the state.
Odion who was among the several Nigerian youths honoured by the National Headquarters of the PCN appealed to the present and incoming senators of the Federal Republic to look at ways of expedition action on the passage of the enabling law for the organisation, as it is in the National interest.
Meanwhile interested Nigerian youths of Edo origin have been called upon to seize the opportunity of being active participants in the building of a peaceful and united Nigeria by enrolling in Peace Corp of Nigeria, PCN.
