42-year-old woman docked over alleged N1.14m rice fraud in Badagry

Badagry (Lagos State), Jan. 23, 2026 (NAN) The police on Friday arraigned a 42-year-old businesswoman, Aminat Taiwo, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N1.14 million under the guise of supplying rice.

 

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a one-count charge of fraud.

 

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

 

The prosecutor, Insp Friday Mamoh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 6, 2025, at Opposite Beach Town, Joseph Dosu area of Badagry, Lagos.

 

Mamoh alleged that Taiwo fraudulently collected the sum of N1,140,000 under the pretence of supplying 17 bags of foreign rice but failed to do so.

 

He said the defendant was later arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.

 

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

 

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. J. Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum.

 

The magistrate ruled that one of the sureties must be self-employed.

 

The case was adjourned until Feb. 23 for mention. (NAN)
