Yenagoa, July 28, 2025 (NAN) The Citizens Whistleblowers Coalition has urged the Federal Government to quickly investigate alleged unfair business practices being perpetrated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
The coalition made the call in a petition to President Bola Tinubu, which was made available to newsmen in Yenagoa on monday.
The petition was signed by the Programme Officer, Nafiu Ibrahim; the Communication and Liaison Officer, Ella Susan, and the Socio-Economic Rights Officer, Dodeye Arikpo.
The coalition said that MSC, a global shipping company, operating in Nigeria, should be investigated over alleged serial economic sabotage and judicial subversion.
It said that the firm had been perpetrating unfair container deposit and demurrage charges as well as illegal detention of shipments.
The whistleblowers stated that the petition followed MSC’s refusal to honour an invitation by the National Assembly and its blatant disregard to a ministerial memo on container deposit charges.
“The shipping firm’s unfair business practices are directly impacting the Nigerian economy, and has led to high cost of goods and services in the country.
“The company’s practices are contrary to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Act, and other laws of the country.
“We call your attention to the ill-treatment and oppression of Nigerians by MSC, a firm that accounts for majority of the imports into the country,” the petition read in parts.
“The investigation should focus on economic sabotage, tax evasion, and regulatory violations. We demand that MSC respects Nigerian laws while doing business in the country,” the coalition said.
It further urged the Federal Government to mandate the Federal Inland Revenue Service to audit MSC’s declared revenues and immediately assess the accuracy of its tax remittances.(NAN)
