The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), has urged guidance counsellors, teachers, school owners and education officers to be committed to supporting the social, emotional and academic development of students.

Dr Justina Anyadiegwu, Executive Chairman, ASUBEB, made the call during the 2025/2026 Third Term Staff Forum for Counsellors held on Tuesday in Awka.

Anyadiegwu, said educators played a critical role in shaping the lives and future of children, both within and outside the classroom.

According to her, teachers are also counsellors whose influence extends beyond academic instruction to helping students navigate personal, social and developmental challenges.

The ASUBEB chairman said the forum provided an opportunity for participants to exchange experiences, evaluate progress and develop strategies aimed at improving educational outcomes in the state.

“The role of guidance counsellors has become increasingly important as students face variety of challenges, including social pressures, mental health concerns, family-related issues and career uncertainties.

“Counsellors remain central to helping students overcome these obstacles and achieve their full potential,” she said.

Anyadiegwu commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for his sustained investment in the education sector through infrastructure development, capacity building, technology integration and innovative learning initiatives.

She said the interventions were positioning schools in the state to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world.

In her remarks, the Academic Service Director of ASUBEB, Mrs Christy Chukwuma, described the forum as an important platform for engagement between staff members and management.

Chukwuma said the gathering encouraged the exchange of ideas, fostered mutual understanding and provided an avenue for addressing challenges affecting the basic education system.

“Such interactions are essential for developing practical solutions that will strengthen the delivery of quality basic education across the state,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the forum featured presentations on creating child-friendly learning environments, promoting digital literacy and the safe use of technology, as well as enhancing parental involvement in students’ academic development.(NAN)
