Employee arraigned for allegedly diverting company’s ₦6.5m

The police on Tuesday, dragged a sales representative, Ogunniyi Oluwatoba, before  an Akure Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly diverting the sum of ₦6.5 million belonging to his employer.

Oluwatoba, whose age and address were not specified, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and conversion.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

After arraignment, the prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Omhenimhen, told the court that he needed more time to thoroughly study the case file before  commencement of trial.

He consequently asked the court for an adjournment.

Meanwhile, defence counsel, Mr E.A. Omoniyi, applied for bail of the defendant in the most liberal terms, arguing that the defendant was a responsible citizen who had never been accused of crime.

He assured the court that the defendant would not abscond if granted bail.

The Magistrate, Mr Taiwo Lebi consequently, granted the defendant bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until July 21, for hearing

According to the charge, the defendant was alleged to have committed the offence between April and May, at Omoluabi Bakery and Confectionery, in Idanre Road, Oke Aro, Akure, Ondo State.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant diverted the sum of N6.5 million realized from sales to his personal use, instead of remitting same to the company’s account. (NAN)
