Prof. Badmas Yusuf of Islamic Studies, University of Ilorin, has charged members of the Alumni associations of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria to assist indigent students with scholarships, the establishment of endowment and project partnership.

Yusuf, who is a former Dean, Postgraduate School, made the call on Monday at the Bayero University, Kano, Ilorin Emirate Alumni Maiden Reunion, held in Ilorin.

The don spoke on the topic: “The Role of Alumni Association in the Promotion and Achievement of the Education Sector”.

He encouraged Alumni associations to offer support to such institutions to ensure better service delivery.

He described education as a powerful instrument, which gives one abundant opportunity to stand high in society and beyond while encouraging people to embrace and support education.

“Taking a look at the nation’s educational system, everyone must invest in their children’s education,” he said.

Also, Dr Saudat Abdulbaqi, an Associate Professor at the Department of Mass Communication of the university, appealed to Nigerians to take drastic measures toward curbing the menace of depression.

Speaking on: “Curbing the Menace of Depression and the Increase of Suicide in the Society”, Abdulbaqi said depression was accentuating the rapidity of suicide cases among youths in the country.

She described depression as a mood disorder that makes one feel constantly sad or lose interest in life.

The don explained that the signs to look out for when a person is depressed also include feeling worthlessness, poor concentration and fatigue.

Abdulbaqi, who is also the Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, disclosed that the several consequences of depression being recorded across the country had led Nigeria to be ranked as the nation with the highest rate of suicide in Africa.

She therefore urged Nigerians to avoid being domestically, physically, or sexually abused as she also encouraged them to take care of their health.

The expert in communication also stressed the need to always facilitate adequate and effective communication with depressed people and provide them early medical attention. (NAN)
