ABIDJAN, 14 January 14, 2024 The Ivory Coast national football team, known as the Elephants, clinched a well-deserved victory over the African wild dogs of Guinea-Bissau in a thrilling AFCON 2023 match late Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium Ebimpe in Abidjan.

Seko Fofana, the 28-year-old midfielder from Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia, set the tone for the host nation by opening the scoring chart in the fourth minute. Although he hit the woodwork in the 35th minute, narrowly missing a brace, Fofana’s early goal gave the Elephants a lead in the keenly contested match.

Jean-Philippe Krasso extended the host nation’s lead, doubling the score 13 minutes into the second half, sparking jubilation among the orange-clad supporters who filled the 60,000-seater stadium with vibrant drumming and singing.

The first half saw the elephants dominate, securing a one-goal advantage. The host nation’s Evan Ndicka received the first yellow card of the tournament in the 30th minute, cautioned by Egyptian referee Amin Omar. Moro Cassama of Guinea-Bissau also earned a yellow card a minute before the end of the first half due to a foul on Krasso.

Both teams made strategic substitutions, with Singo, Diomande, Sangare, Krasso, and Bamba stepping in for the Ivory Coast, while Guinea-Bissau replaced Cassama, Rodrigues, Balde, and Mane.

Ivory Coast’s win places them at the top of the Group A table on Match Day 1, securing three crucial points. As the tournament unfolds, football enthusiasts await the upcoming clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, scheduled for tomorrow at 3 p.m. (UTC+1). The AFCON 2023 promises to deliver thrilling matches and showcase the best of African football talent.
