Adamawa govt. tasks stakeholders on advocacy for safe schools

Adamawa Government on Tuesday tasked stakeholders on effective sensitization and advocacy for safe schools and pupils across the 21 Local Government Areas.

Dr Garba Pella, Commissioner for  Education and Human Capital Development, made the call  at a meeting with stakeholders, organised by Global Partnership for Education (GPE-II) in Yola.

“As a government we feel school environment need to be made safe in all  communities. No child, under any circumstances, will learn very well in an environment that is perceived to be harmful.

“So, in as much as possible, we are aggressive in our campaign to mop up children from the streets to classrooms, but safety  of  the environment for them to learn is equally important,” he said.

Pella added that if schools were  not safe, there were every tendency  that the children would not stay, stressing the  need for effective advocacy from traditional leaders, down to School Based Management Committee (SBMC) among others.

In his address, Mr Michel Medugu, GPE Project Coordinator said, the project was doing everything possible to ensure better education for all and to achieve the needed safety environment for the children.

He said that  advocacy was one of the best ways to achieve the desired awareness on safety of children from home to school and from  school back home.

Medugu advised the stakeholders to ensure that the campaign reached the targeted communities, so that the objectives of the exercise would be achieved.

Maryamu Ali, GPE’s Gender Officer, urged the stakeholders to strictly follow  the guidelines  and to ensure that the project toilets  were  segregated by gender,  for both pupils and teachers in the schools. (NAN)
