Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shu’aibu, on Friday inaugurated four blocks of 120 flats and a 60,000-litre solar-powered borehole for soldiers at Ribadu Cantonment, Kotoko Barracks in Kaduna.
Shu’aibu, who was represented by the Chief of Administration, Army Headquarters, Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullah, said the project was part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of Nigerian Army personnel and their families.
This, according to the army boss, is in line with the Soldier First Culture as well as the Chief of Army Staff Command Philosophy.
He described the development as a significant milestone in the army’s welfare programme, noting that it reflected the COAS’ commitment to enhancing the well-being of troops in barracks across the country.
“This is a clear demonstration of the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, which prioritizes the welfare and well-being of personnel.
He commended the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division for successfully executing the project, adding that the initiative marked the beginning of more welfare interventions.
According to him, the newly renovated accommodation had previously been in a deplorable condition, with some structures uninhabitable due to damaged roofing and poor facilities.
Shu’aibu urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities by ensuring proper maintenance and preventing vandalism.
“Much has been given, and much is expected. Beneficiaries must reciprocate this gesture by taking good care of the accommodation.
“If these facilities are properly maintained, it will encourage the authorities to embark on more renovation projects in the near future,” he revealed.
The army chief assured that the Army leadership would continue to prioritise the welfare of personnel through provision of decent accommodation and essential services.
He expressed optimism that the improved living conditions would boost morale and enhance operational efficiency among troops.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project included 120 housing units and a solar-powered borehole with a capacity of 60,000 litres to ensure steady water supply within the barracks.
NAN also reports that the COAS representative was accompanied by Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, the GOC 1 Division Nigerian Army Kaduna, and other principal officers from the Division.(NAN)
