Lagos, Nigeria, January 12, 2024: In a recent visit to the Police Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Idowu Owohunwa emphasized the imperative for police personnel to adhere strictly to legal detention timelines, preventing the unlawful extension of suspects’ confinement.

During his inspection on Friday, AIG Owohunwa assessed the detainee conditions within the unit, expressing concern over the duration of some individuals’ confinement in the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) cells.

According to a statement released by the department’s spokesperson, ASP Aminat Mayegun, AIG Owohunwa, following interactions with detainees, urged the Commissioner of Police overseeing the SFU to ensure compliance with approved detention periods.

The AIG underscored the significance of continual monitoring of cells to prevent any instances of custodial violence. He stressed the need for officers to respect the rights of citizens in custody, emphasizing that his visit served as a reminder for humane treatment and the protection of fundamental rights.

AIG Owohunwa called on all sectional heads to adopt a proactive approach by regularly visiting cells under their jurisdiction.
