Anambra East, Sept. 17, 2025 (NAN) Mr Paul Chukwuma, Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate in the upcoming Nov. 8 Anambra election, has promised to guarantee Local Government Area autonomy in the state, if elected.
Chukwuma made the pledge at a news conference on Tuesday in Umueri, his country home in Anambra East Local Government Area.
“I will not associate myself with anything illegal, if elected as the governor of Anambra.
“I will ensure that the three tiers of government functioned independently. therefore, I will make sure that the local government area autonomy is upheld to benefit our people in the 21 councils of the state.
“I am not going to interfere with the council administration and funding.”
He said he would ensure a robust state Assembly where the independence of the legislature is guaranteed.
“I don’t want to have a legislature that will be in my pocket because they are elected by their constituencies to represent them.”
He expressed optimism of becoming the next governor of the state, going by the response of the people during electioneering campaigns.
“I am excited by the support we get from the people of Anambra during the electioneering campaigns.
“The message is simple, that they want a positive change to reclaim their state ,” he said.
According to him, we intend to do this by making sure that the local government administration works very well.
The candidate also promised to tackle the security challenges bedeviling the state within six months, if elected.
“As far as I am concerned, the insecurity in Anambra is worrisome.
“I want to assure our people that if they elect me by God’s grace, within six months, I am going to deal squarely with the issue of insecurity. It will be a thing of the past,” he said.
The YPP candidate also said he would put the menace of Monday “sit-at-home”, by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra to an end.
“If we end the Monday sit-at-home, it will help us return to normal life and also boost socioeconomic activities,” he said.
Chukwuma pledged to deploy modern technology to ensure that the people paid their taxes, prevent corruption and utilise the revenue for their benefits.
He further promised to engage the people on issue based campaigns and not campaign of calumny as displayed by some politicians.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Supreme Court on July 11 2024, delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy and independence of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. (NAN)
