Anambra to construct interlocking roads in Awka–ACTDA

Mr Ossy Onuko, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), says construction of roads within the city will henceforth be executed with interlocking stones.

Onuko communicated this while inaugurating a 130-meter road in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area, on Friday.

He said the new road initiative entailed good drainage system, solar-powered street lights, enhanced quality aesthetics, cost-effectiveness and durability.

“This road we are commissioning is of strategic importance to us; it is a pilot  project for the use of paving stones for road construction we are introducing in ACTDA.

“Paving stone roads are durable, cheaper and eco-friendly.

“We are inspired by the success of interlocking stones  in some other cities, we have decided to replicate it here in Awka capital territory,” he said.

In his remark, Mr Ifeanyi Okoma, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, said the project was well supervised to ensure the qualities that would guarantee the longevity and environment friendly functions were captured.

Okoma commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for approving the innovation in the effort to make Anambra a mega smart city

Mr  Vincent Ojukwu, the contractor who handled the project, said they were  meticulous in the construction process .

Ojukwu said it involved extensive excavation of the swampy area and replacing bad soil with sharp sand with multiple compaction stages to ensure the road’s durability.(NAN
