Around two thirds of Ukraine refugees want to return, UNHCR says

A survey by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has found that the majority of Ukrainian refugees and those who have been internally displaced want to return to their old homes.

Philippe Leclerc said that out of a total of 9,900 people surveyed in January and February, 65 percent of refugees and 72 percent of displaced persons expressed a desire to return.

Leclerc, who is the agency’s regional director for Europe, said this on Tuesday.

The UNHCR estimated that around 6.5 million people have fled abroad from Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

It said that about 3.7 million others have been displaced from their homes by the fighting and have found refuge in other parts of Ukraine.

In addition to the security situation, refugees and internally displaced persons also cited a lack of job prospects and the destruction of houses and flats as reasons for not returning. (dpa/NAN)
