Beauty therapists advise parents against imposing skills on children

Some beauty therapists in Mararaba in Nasarawa State have expressed divergent opinions on the need for parents to allow their children to choose skills they have a passion for.

The therapists, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Mararaba, said the imposition of particular skills on children would not make them excel.

They argued that the reason most children were not doing well in their chosen skills was because most parents had failed to allow them to choose what they had passion for.

According to them, allowing your child to acquire skill in any area of his or her choice will help the child to be self-reliant in the future.

Mrs. Elizabeth Uba, a beauty therapist, said that many parents have failed in their role of helping their children in bringing out their potential.

Uba  explained that such had led to a situation where the children never do well in the line of the skill imposed on them.

’As a parent, you guide your children on their skill and passion, but do not impose any skill on them; whatever you do not have passion for hardly ends well.

” As a beauty therapist, I can tell you that I am functioning well in this field because I was not forced into it; I was so passionate about anything that has to do with beauty.

” After my university education, I decided to go into beauty therapy because I had passion for it

” Due to my passion and interest, I was able to acquire every knowledge patterning to beauty, and I confidently say I am not having any regret about it.

”Therefore, parents should encourage their children in skills or talents they have a passion for,” she said.

Miss Doris Ewere, a cosmetologist, said that a child should be given the opportunity to decide on the skill acquisition of his or her choice.

According to her, that will make a child develop and excel in the area of his or her choice.

Ewere said that children cannot develop and excel in what they do not have an interest or passion for because doing so would not make them independent.

“Development works with what an individual chooses to do, doing it well and expanding on it.

“But in a situation where a child is not given the liberty to choose, disaster will be the order of the day.

“Even when they are allowed to choose their skill, they should also ensure that they are diversified in order not to be restricted to a particular skill.

“Example: when you are a make-up artist, you will be limited to make-up, but when you diversify, you will have knowledge of other areas like cosmetology, manicurist, and pedicurist, among others.

“When you do not have a client in make-up, you will definitely have a client in cosmetology because everyday new things are trending,” she said.

Mr. James Edward, a hair stylist, said the gender of a child does not determine the skill acquisition a child would choose to acquire.

According to him, what really matters is a child’s passion for the skill and how he or she can excel in it.

” When you discover that your child talks more about a particular skill, which you as a parent do not like, do not discourage the child. Help the child acquire the skill. (NAN)
