A 25-year-old businessman, Ekechi Alegwu, on Friday appeared before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged N655,000 fraud.

Alegwu, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining under false pretenses.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp Benedict Aigbokhan,  told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large on Nov. 26, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Ijegun Road, Ikotun, Lagos.

Aigbokhan said that the defendant collected the sum of N655,000 from the complainant, Mr. David Ayoade, for the delivery of a 75 Inches, Samsung Television, which he failed to deliver.

He said that the defendant converted the  money to his personal use and all efforts by the complainant to retrieve the money proved abortive.

Aigbokhan said the offences contravened Sections 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr. E.O. Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ogunkanmi ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until Feb. 9 for mention. (NAN)
