A former employee of Apek Microfinance Bank, Tosin Akintola, 28, on Wednesday appeared before an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court charged with misappropriating N1,768,000 belonging to the bank.
Akintola, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal misappropriation.
The prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Ologbonsaye informed the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov. 28 at Apek Microfinance Bank in Ilorin, Ologbonsaye said that Akintola collected deposits from bank customers to the tune of N1,768,000, embezzled it and, then, absconded. He said that the defendant was later apprehended when the matter was reported to the police.
Ologbonsaye added that the alleged offences contravened Sections 312 and 309 of the Penal Code. The prosecutor said that the court had the discretion to grant bail to the defendant because the investigation into the case was still ongoing. Magistrate Kudirat Yahaya granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Jan. 14, 2020 for further mention.
