Calabar carnival: CP solicits citizens’ cooperation to curb insecurity

Calabar, Nov. 20, 2023 (NAN): The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr. Gyogon Grimah, has called for citizens cooperation to curb insecurity in the state before, during, and after the annual Calabar carnival.

The commissioner, who was represented by DSP Ewa Igri, made the call at a news conference on the forthcoming carnival in Calabar on Monday.

While noting that the state command of the Police had mapped out strategy to ensure a hitch free carnival, he, however, said that security matters should not be left for the law enforcement agency alone.

He further said that the Police were working in synergy with other sister agencies to ensure a secured state even after the carnival.

According to him, “We are indeed doing our best to ensure a safer Cross River, and we are not in this alone; we are working with our sister security agencies.

“However, for an effective security and policing, there must be citizens participation.

“Security agencies need the people to volunteer information as they can’t be everywhere at the same time.

“Simirlarly, we are also enjoining the people to form vigilante group in their localities.

“We also seek the support of the traditonal institutions to rid the state of crimes and criminalities.”

NAN reports that insecurity, especially kidnapping, has posed a serious threat to the annual carnival.

There has been increase in the spate of abduction in the Cross River capital city of recent.

Many prominent persons, especially clergymen, medical professionals, lawyers and others have been targets of kidnappings in Calabar.
