Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, called on the Asia-Europe regions to give more support for the multilateral trading system in order to boost trade cooperation between the two continents.

Hun Sen made the call at the opening session of the first Asia-Europe Economic and Business Forum via videoconference from the capital Phnom Penh, on Wednesday.

He said that international trade was a key locomotive for promoting economic growth and job creation.

“With the new trend of changes in trade and global supply chains … both regions need to pay more attention to supporting multilateral trading system.

“This is especially by further enhancing liberalization and trade facilitation by removing trade and investment barriers to tap the potential of Asia-Europe trade cooperation,’’ he said.

The Cambodian leader said that under the multilateral framework, it has been observed that some countries differed in their views in promoting trade cooperation as well as regional and global socio-economic development.

“In this sense, both regions need to strengthen unity and uphold multilateral mechanisms to address issues in all areas and accelerate socio-economic connectivity, so as to advance the agenda for sustainable and inclusive development.

“Going forward, as the COVID-19 crisis is expected to subside in the near future, the regions need to promote the normalcy of trade flow, business and investment.

“Also corresponding to the new global trends is an essential and urgent task to revive and enhance the socio-economic development of Asia-Europe,’’ he added. (Xinhua/NAN).
