An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 49-year-old man, Mustapha Adesina, to two years imprisonment for stealing vegetables worth N5,000.
Adesina, whose address is unknown, pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him.
The magistrate, Idowu Olayinka, said the court had to sentence the accused since he had pleaded guilty.
Olayinka, however, gave Adesina an option of N10,000 fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Ozimini, told the court that the offence was committed on Sunday at about 6.00 p.m. at Ita-Ika in Abeokuta.
He said the accused went to the farm of the complainant, Festus Adekunle, and stole the vegetables.
“Adesina had been going to the complainant’s farm every Sunday to steal his vegetables and he (Adekunle) had been on the lookout for him.
“That particular Sunday, the complainant hid in his farm waiting patiently for the thief who steals his vegetables and as usual Adesina came.
“The complainant raised an alarm and this alerted other farmers, leading to the arrest of Adesina,’’ he said.
He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
