Wife of Anambra governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, on Friday, described child labor as a crime against humanity, conscience and faith, calling for renewed commitment to protecting children, from exploitation.
Soludo, also the Founder of Healthy Living Initiative, made the remark in a message to mark the 2026 World Day Against Child Labor.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Day Against Child Labor is observed every June 12, to raise awareness on the exploitation of children as well as advocate steps to eradicate the menace globally.
The theme of the celebration is: “Red Card to Child Labor; Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults”.
She noted that every child deserved freedom and opportunity to learn, dream, play and grow in a safe and promising environment.
“Child labor is not just a crime against humanity; it is a crime against conscience and faith,” she said.
Soludo said that no child should be burdened with responsibilities that robbed them of their childhood, education, health and future prospects.
According to her, governments, communities, families and other stakeholders, must work together to safeguard the rights, dignity and welfare of every child.
The governor’s wife urged stakeholders to address the social, cultural and economic challenges that exposed children to exploitation, while creating opportunities for them to thrive.
“As we observe the World Day Against Child Labor, let us renew our collective commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of every child.
“We must continue to create opportunities that allow our children to thrive while addressing the social, cultural and economic challenges that expose them to exploitation,” she said.
She reiterated that the initiative was committed to promoting programmes and advocacy efforts that support the wellbeing, education and development of children across the state. (NAN)
