A supremacy war in Aniocha North Local Government Area has put a hold on the announcement of the governorship results in Delta State.
Besides the council area, results from the other 24 Local Government Areas of the state have been accounted for, with Peoples Democratic Party’s Senator Ifeanyi Okowa leading in 20.
Four of the Local Government Areas – Udu, Uvwie, Ethiope East and Ughelli North – were won by Labour Party’s Chief Great Ogboru.
The crisis in Aniocha North was as caused by the non-acceptance of the victory of the Accord Party’s governorship candidate, O.C. Okocha, who reportedly won the House of Assembly seat of the constituency.
The out-going Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, allegedly resisted the collation of the governorship election result of the council until the victory of Okocha was confirmed. The supremacy battle, at about 11.30pm on Sunday, forced the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the state, Aniedi Ikiowak, to postpone the declaration of the winner of the governorship race till Monday (today).
It will be recalled that Ochei became aggrieved and left the PDP for Accord Party after he lost the governorship primaries of the PDP on December 8, last year. He thereafter picked the Accord Party ticket for Delta North Senatorial District, slugged it out with the former state Chairman of PDP, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, but lost. His only hope of relevance is his council area where he holds sway. Hence his desperation to produce his successor in the state House of Assembly.
