Driver in court for allegedly stealing N1.3m goods

A 48-year-old driver, Muhammed Sulaiman, who allegedly stole goods worth N1.3 million, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of  stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Racheal Williams, told the court that the driver committed the theft  on August. 26.

Williams said that the defendant stole cartons of Nescafe and wheat cereal he was  transporting to Lafia  for GPC Energy and Logistics.

The prosecutor submitted that the driver called the company’s manager and told him that the vehicle broke down and thieves carted away some of the goods.

Williams said that the defendant stole  36 cartons of Nescafe and 30 cartons of wheat cereal worth  N1.3 million.

According to the prosecutor, stealing contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stealing is punishable with three years’ imprisonment under the section.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr T. O Fashanu, granted the defendant  bail in the sum  of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Fashanu adjourned the case until October. 6 for trial. (NAN)
