The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning to the public about plans by certain individuals to cause a total breakdown of law and order in the country following the Gubernatorial and State Assembly Elections scheduled for March 11, 2023. The DSS has also expressed concern over the palpable political tension in some parts of the country ahead of the elections.
In a statement, the DSS urged politicians and their supporters to engage constructively and avoid fake news and hate speech that could threaten peaceful coexistence. The agency emphasized that the election should not be seen as a do-or-die affair, and reminded everyone that aggrieved parties could seek redress through the courts.
The DSS also reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process by partnering with relevant stakeholders to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections. The agency stated that it had carried out mop-up operations in collaboration with sister agencies to thwart nefarious plans and activities of undesirable elements who might seek to undermine the electoral process.
The DSS vowed to prevent any person or group, regardless of their status, from disrupting the scheduled elections in any part of the country. The agency assured citizens that it was committed to their safety and security as they went out to exercise their civic responsibility.
The statement urged all stakeholders to abide by the rules of engagement, including the Electoral Act and extant guidelines. The DSS concluded by calling on Nigerians to have faith in the country’s institutions and work together to maintain peace and stability in the aftermath of the elections.
