Alhaji Ishaq Sadeeq, the Acting Secretary, FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, has restated the commitment of the FCT Administration to put measures in place towards improving abattoir operations in the territory.

Sedeeq stated this at an assessment of projects under the Secretariat in the six Area Councils of the FCT on Friday in Abuja.

He said as the administrative capital of Nigeria and the mirror of Nigeria, the services provided in the abattoirs should be in line with global best practices.

The acting secretary, who is also the Director of Finance and Account of the secretariat, emphasized the need for butchers to adhere to hygienic meat handling practices.

Sadeeq urged veterinary doctors to ensure that only certified meat was sold to the public for consumption.

“Our veterinary doctors have no doubt been trying their best but they will need to put in more efforts in ensuring compliance.

“We have to ensure that butchers not comply with hygienic practices but also ensure timely clean-up of abattoir waste,” he said.

He urged livestock farmers and other pet owners to patronize the newly commissioned Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Nyanya for the treatment of their animals.

Sadeeq explained that the laboratory was fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and a veterinary pharmacy where they can access quality animal drugs and health care.

In a related development, Sadeeq said the Kado Fishmarket was big enough to be a source of income for the FCT administration in terms of revenue generation.

He said the secretariat would make a case for it at the management level in order to harness the full potentials inherent in the market.

He said that this would ensure improved revenue generation and livelihood for both the farmers and the FCT populace as a whole.

Other facilities visited were the warehouses and Agro-service centres vandalized during the #EndSARS protest.

Sadeeq said that the administration was working assiduously towards the rehabilitation of the centres. (NAN)
