Lagos, Nigeria, February 18, 2024 – The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared a 24-hour closure of the Third Mainland Bridge for Lagos Island-bound traffic from Iyana Oworonshoki, effective from midnight on Sunday, February 18, to midnight on Monday, February 19.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, released a statement on Saturday night explaining that the emergency measure is essential to facilitate repairs on a crucial section of the bridge.
During the closure, motorists travelling from Lagos Island to Oworonshoki will have unrestricted access to the bridge, while those heading in the opposite direction will be affected by the closure.
Kesha emphasised, “The temporary 24-hour closure of the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound traffic is to enable the ministry to carry out effective repairs on an important section of the bridge.”
Motorists were advised to utilize alternative routes and adhere to the directives of traffic regulatory officers. Alternative routes suggested include Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams Avenue-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS, Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Jibowu-Yaba-Oyingbo-Iddo-Carter bridge-CMS, and Gbagada-Anthony-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS.
Kesha urged motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize inconvenience during the repair period. She also expressed appreciation for the public’s understanding and cooperation, affirming the government’s commitment to providing lasting infrastructure for road users’ comfort.
The closure of the Third Mainland Bridge underscores ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to maintain and improve critical transportation infrastructure in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
