The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has commenced a statewide flood risk assessment and sensitization campaign ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

The Executive Secretary of KADSEMA, Mr Usman Mazadu, said on Wednesday that the exercise followed the release of the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO).

Mazadu said the exercise was aimed at identifying causes of flooding, assessing vulnerable communities and recommending measures to mitigate flood risks during the rainy season.

He said the agency, in collaboration with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), NGOs and humanitarian organizations, was conducting assessments and awareness campaigns in flood-prone communities across the state.

According to him, the assessment will cover the three senatorial zones of the state to strengthen preparedness and improve emergency response planning.

Mazadu said the first phase of the exercise covered communities within Kaduna metropolis, including Rafin Guza, Malali, Ramat Road, Sabon Tasha, Bashama and Nasarawa.

He identified indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways, blocked drainage channels, construction along waterways and river overflow as major causes of flooding in the affected communities.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr Akhaine Michael said many drainage channels in the areas visited were filled with debris and required expansion for free flow of water.

Michael said the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps would continue to support KADSEMA through security coverage and operational assistance during field assessments aimed at minimizing flood disasters and protecting lives and property.

Also, Rahama Suleiman, Head of Environment, Climate and Energy, National Orientation Agency Kaduna State Directorate, commended KADSEMA for the proactive initiative to sensitize communities on flood mitigation.

She said findings from the assessment would be cascaded to field officers to strengthen public awareness and preparedness across communities. (NAN)
