Ilorin, Feb. 17, 2026 (NAN) The Kwara Government has flagged-off vaccination campaign against trans-boundary animal diseases across the 16 local government areas of the state.
The campaign, which was flagged-off on Tuesday in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state, is to strengthen animal health services and boost livestock productivity.
Speaking at the programme, the State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas, explained that the vaccination exercise was being undertaken nationwide.
According to her, this is part of the World Bank Support Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), trans-boundary animal disease vaccinations programme, designed to prevent and control livestock diseases.
Thomas, represented by the Director Veterinary Services, Dr Abdullateef Olugbon, stated that the exercise was aimed at enhance productivity, protect pastoral and farming livelihoods and promote national food security.
She also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the L-PRES project for supporting the state in the fight against major trans-boundary animal diseases, stressing that the state was committed to combating these diseases.
The commissioner further advised livestock farmers in the state to register with the state Ministry of Livestock Development to enable them benefit from the vaccination and other programmes of the Government.
Also speaking, the Director, Livestock Services in the Ministry, Alhaji Mohammed Umar, said L-PRES was an Initiative designed to strengthen animal health systems and improve resilience within Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Umar, who said that the vaccination was timely and critical to the growth of the livestock sector, assured that the vaccines would be judiciously utilized to safeguard livestock across the state.
On his part, the State Project Coordinator, Mr Olusoji Oyawoye explained that the exercise would help to prevent trans-boundary animal diseases outbreak, reduce morbidity and improve productivity in the livestock sector of the State.
Oyawoye who was represented by the Project Animal Health Officer, Dr Bukola Richards, pointed out that the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development through the L-PRES had recently delivered vaccines against trans-boundary animal diseases.
