Members of Ogun House of Assembly on Thursday sought the need to strengthen the operations of the State Public Works Agency to enable it embark on massive road rehabilitations across the state.

The lawmakers led by the chairman, House   Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Mr  Abayomi Fasuwa, made the request during an interactive session with the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Adesanya, in Abeokuta.

Fasuwa commended the infrastructural development efforts of  the Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led administration.

He  harped on the need to boost the independent operations of the State Public Works Agency.

The lawmaker noted that it had become imperative for the ministry to equally improve on the supervision of all contractors handling the construction of road projects in the state to ensure they deliver quality works.

Other committee members in their respective submissions  decried the deplorable conditions of roads in the state.

They pointed out that some of the roads previously delivered by contractors had been subjected to damages within the projects’ general liability period.

They counseled the commissioner to look inwards toward maximizing available funds to construct and, where necessary, rehabilitate more roads.

In his response , the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Adesanya, attributed the slow pace of road projects to paucity of funds, assuring  the committee that  the  contractors would return to sites  immediately the rains subside.

Adesanya informed  the lawmakers of the increasing priority accorded to quality road construction by the  Gov. Abiodun-led administration.

He added that the state government had continued to synergise with the Federal Government to fix some federal roads across the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the General Manager, State Public Works Agency, Mr. Gbenga Akintola, also attended  the interactive session. (NAN)
