Man, 36, in court over alleged child theft
The police in Lagos on Tuesday arraigned a 36-year-old man, Aminu Shanaki, for allegedly abducting a child.
Shanaki is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp. John Iberedem, told you court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept. 7 at Kola Bus Stop in Alagbado, Lagos.
Iberedem said that the defendant stole a child belonging to the complainant, Mrs. Kausara Olaegbe.
He said that the defendant was caught by passersby, who handed him over to the police.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 275(1)(a) and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 275 stipulates a 14-year jail term for abduction, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.
The magistrate, Mrs. E. Kubeinje, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Kubeinje said that the surety must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until Oct. 15, for mention. (NAN)
