A 35-year-old man, Douglas Eliagwu, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing jewelry and cash worth N700.000.
Eliagwu is standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, conduct likely to cause breach of peace, housebreaking and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant and others still at large allegedly committed the offences in May at No. 5 Michael Ayeni St., Balogun Avenue, Egbeda-Idimu, Lagos.
Ikhayere said the defendant and his accomplices conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by breaking into the apartment of one Abimbola Amodu.
She said the defendant broke into the apartment with intent to steal.
The prosecutor said the defendant stole a gold earring valued at N500,000, N200,000 cash and other personal items belonging to the complainant.
She said the total value of the items stolen was N700,000.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 168(d), 287, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Lateef A. Owolabi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Owolabi ordered the sureties to provide evidence of tax payment and undergo address verification.
The case was adjourned until July 1 for further hearing. (NAN)
