Man jailed 9 months for stealing employer’s phone

A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, sentenced a 23-year-old man, Godwin Anthony, to nine months imprisonment for stealing his employer’s cell phone.

The police charged Anthony, a resident of Tudunwada, Lugbe, Abuja, with stealing.

He pleaded guilty and  begged the court for leniency.

The judge, Mr. Aliyu Kagarko, gave him the option of a N40,000 fine and warned him to desist from crime.

The judge said that the punishment would have been stiffer if Anthony had not saved the court the rigour of a protracted trial.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr. Olisaemeka Okeke, told the court that the complainant, Mr. innocent Achi of Tudunwada Village, Lugbe, reported the case at the Lugbe Police Station on March 8.

Okeke said that, on the said date, Anthony deceived the complainant by telling him that he was looking for a job at Timber Shop, Lugbe.

The prosecutor said that the complainant, therefore, employed Anthony as a machine operator.

Okeke said that the convict requested N200 from the complainant for food, and he gave it to him.

He told the court that Anthony then stole the complainant’s Tecno Spark 20 worth N120,000 and ran to an unknown destination.

The prosecutor said that during the police investigation, Anthony confessed that he sold the phone for N20,000.

Okeke said that the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
