An Upper Area Court Grade I in Ilorin has remanded one Fawas Olodun at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre over an alleged criminal trespass and theft at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
Olodun of Faje Community, via Oke-Ose was arraigned before Hon. Alhasaan Adamu on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.
According to the First Information Report filed at the Oke-Oyi Police Station, on Aug. 10, the complainant, Ogunbiyi Ojebola, a security man attached to the UITH and resident of the University of Ilorin Quarters, reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Oke-Oyi, that the incident occurred on Aug. 7 at 9:00a.m.
Ojebola said he was in his farm within the UITH premises when the suspect approached him and requested a hoe to dig a rabbit hole. He said he released the hoe to him.
The complainant stated that when he returned to the farm in the evening, he discovered that the hoe was not used to dig a rabbit hole as claimed, but was allegedly used to dig and remove an electric cable belonging to a UITH building.
During police investigation, the suspect was said to have confessed to the offences.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that earlier in the court, the defendant pleaded guilty to the allegation of theft.
The prosecutor, Insp. Ayoade Abdulazeez, opposed the application for bail, arguing that granting it could encourage others to engage in similar acts.
He said no number of sureties could guarantee the defendant’s attendance in court, adding that if granted bail, he might commit the same or similar offences.
According to him, the offences is contrary to the provisions of Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code Law.
The presiding Judge, Hon. Alhasaan Adamu, ordered that despite the guilty plea entered by the defendant, the prosecution is required by law to present at least one witness to establish the case.
The court subsequently remanded the defendant at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre, Ilorin, and adjourned the case to Sept. 28, for continuation of hearing to enable the prosecution assemble its witness. (NAN).
