The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received over 1.5 million human rights violations in six months.
This is contained in the NHRC dashboard and observatory reports from the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from January to June.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commission said it recorded in 180, 341 complaints in January, 223, 144 in February and 256, 132 in March.
In April, 266, 787 it said it received, 268,787 complaints were received in May while 326,113 were received in June.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu, SAN, in a note issued in the report, stressed that the dashboard remained a vital accountability tool for identifying trends, emerging risks, and areas requiring urgent intervention.
“We in the commission are alarmed by incidents of sexual violence against children.
”This pattern of sustained, unresolved violence demands urgent, coordinated intervention” he said.
He said May 2026 was a has been a “debilitative” month for human rights in Nigeria.
” Within 31 days, we witnessed incidents that deeply challenged our collective commitment to human dignity and fundamental freedoms.
”Violent attacks, kidnappings, communal clashes, and displacement, gender-based violence, mob actions, and alleged abuses linked to law enforcement activities remained major concerns during the period under review” he said.
He expressed concern over the rise in extra-judicial killings by law enforcement and security agencies.
