Nigerian Correctional Service Dispels False Feeding Allowance Claims

The Nigerian Correctional Service has refuted claims circulating in the media that each inmate in custodial facilities is being fed with N200 daily. The Service clarified that the correct daily feeding allowance for inmates is N750 and not the lower amount as mischievously reported.

In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Abubakar Umar, on Thursday in Abuja, the correctional service labeled the media report as false, misleading, and mischievous. The statement emphasized that the approved feeding allowance for inmates is a matter of public record, and vendors are duly paid the sanctioned amount upon completing their supply.

The statement further highlighted that contracts for ration supply are publicly disclosed, and interested vendors are required to apply in accordance with the Public Procurement Act 2007. Each custodial center has a ration committee overseeing the quality assurance of supply, preparation, and distribution to ensure compliance with the approved budget.

The authorities emphasized their commitment to improving inmates’ welfare, both in terms of feeding and empowerment through effective reformation and rehabilitation programs. Efforts are reportedly underway to secure approval for an upward review of the feeding allowance to align with current economic realities.

The Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, expressed unwavering dedication to working for the general well-being of individuals in custody. The correctional service urged the public to disregard the false report and assured them of continued appreciation for the genuine support of well-meaning Nigerians.
