The Nigerian government has frowned at the demolition of its diplomatic building in Ghana by yet-to-be identified persons.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press release on Sunday, noted that “some unidentified persons purportedly on the instructions of the Ghana Urban Development Agency, willfully carried out a demolition of a building belonging to the Nigeria High Commission and located within the premises of the High Commissioner’s Residence in Accra, without prior notification nor approval by the Nigerian High Commission.”

It added that such “action act was a clear violation of the extant provisions of the 1963 Vienna Convention on inviolability of diplomatic premises.”

It also called on its Ghanaian counterpart to arrest those involved, provide adequate security for the building and staff embodying its diplomatic presence, as well as ensure “immediate redress”.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs, in a press release, confirmed that the incident happened around 10:30 pm on Friday, 19 June, 2020.

It acknowledged that the demolition was a diplomatic violation, adding that adequate security had been provided to restore order.

“The Government will therefore, not relent on its primary obligation to guarantee the safety of members of the Diplomatic corps in Ghana,” the statement read in part.
