Nigerian govt announces extension of free rail services for citizens

The Federal Government has extended the period for free rail services offered to commuters. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced the extension on Thursday through its official website.

Originally set to conclude on January 4, 2024, the free rail service will now continue until January 7, 2024, providing an additional three days for Nigerians to benefit from complimentary train rides nationwide.

The NRC conveyed the information with a message on its website, stating, “Dear Passengers, we are pleased to inform you that train services will be free of charge from December 21, 2023, to January 7, 2024, as per the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

This extension follows President Tinubu’s earlier announcement on December 20, 2023, granting a 50% transport fare discount for interstate travel and free commuter rides on all rail lines during the festive season, fostering accessibility and facilitating holiday travel for the public.
