The Nigerian Army, on the evening of Tuesday, May 11,2021,repelled another spirited attack by Boko Haram terrorists in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The attack, which had been anticipated for weeks now, began at past 6pm,as the terrorists swarmed on Jidari Polo,Maiduguri, an area which has become popular as the group’s entry point.
Once the gunfire announced the presence of the terrorists, the men of the Nigerian Army responded to the distress call and launched an offensive, killing 6 terrorists and reclaiming a gun truck, amongst other weapons stolen by the insurgents.
The group’s target, according to a military source was the detention centre at the Giwa Barracks, around the Federal Ministry of Justice, with the sole aim of freeing inmates (most of who are suspected Boko Haram members).
The Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.
In the past months, soldiers have been targeted by the insurgents, who lay ambush on their path.
Hundreds of soldiers and officers have been reportedly killed since January 2021.
At least 25 soldiers were recently killed when a suicide bomber identified as Abdullah al-Ansari rammed an explosives-laden pick-up truck into a military convoy during a clash in Goniri, a boarder community between Yobe and Borno states, killing many soldiers.
In February, about 20 soldiers were also killed in Malari, Borno State by the insurgents.
