The Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Babatunde Salako, has appealed to the Federal Government to foster policies that support home-grown inventions.
Salako made the appeal on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the institute’s two-days2021 annual retreat in Lagos.
“We always want government policy support for most of the things that are developed in Nigeria, not just NIMR.
“In developed countries, their government have policies in place that supports scientific inventions over the years.
“During the advent of COVID-19, countries such as China and Russia started using their own vaccines for their people even before it was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Our government necessarily should make policies to support the use of home-grown solutions that have been tested so that we can save foreign exchange,” he advised.
Salako also appealed to the Federal Government to give due recognition to the institute for some of its ground- breaking research works.
“It is one thing for you to be commended and a different thing entirely to be recognized,” he said.
NAN reports that the retreat is held yearly to review the institute’s activities. (NAN)
