The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) has donated loads of textbooks and instructional materials to the custodial centres in Enugu State.
Presenting the items at the custodial centre in Enugu on Wednesday, NLN Branch Manager, Mrs. Rachael Nebo, said that the donation was meant to encourage reading culture among the inmates.
Nebo said that the donation was part of nationwide readership campaign and ensuring that Nigerians have access to books meant to brighten their knowledge horizon.
“We want to support and promote reading culture among all Nigerians and for our people to seek knowledge to better their lives.
“We are in the custodial centre to further encourage reading culture among the inmates and support those inclined to education,” she said.
The branch manager said that the textbooks covered textbooks for ordinary level (O’ level) subjects in WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, GCE examinations, as well as motivational books for daily personal improvement.
“We also have some “A level“ (Advanced level) books, as well as books on legal jurisprudence and others,” she said.
Nebo said that the NLN also donated the same quantity of textbooks in 2020 to the custodial centres in the state.
“Since 2020, we have been hearing of outstanding success of the inmates in O level examinations and other educational exploits,” she said.
Responding on behalf of the inmates, the state’s Controller of Corrections, Mr. Nicholas Obiako, thanked NLN for its kind gesture towards inmates` educational development.
Obiako, who is also the Commander of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Enugu State Command, said that the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr. Haliru Nababa, was committed to the educational development of inmates.
“The Controller-General is already turning cells to classrooms so as to fast track inmate reformation while in custody.
“Our inmates are recording huge successes in their educational pursuits and examinations, so far,” he said. (NAN)
