February 5, 2024: The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) is set to collaborate with the United States Department of State and international management consultancy firm Deloitte to achieve its net-zero carbon goals. The joint project focuses on reducing the emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases from NNPC’s upstream operations.
The conceptual stage of the project was the central theme of a three-day Technical Assistance on Oil and Gas Sector Global Methane Abatement and Decarbonisation Workshop. The workshop, held at the PTDF Tower in Abuja, commenced on Monday and was a continuation of a previous session conducted in July 2023. Its primary objectives included defining critical success elements for the project.
Among the key elements discussed during the workshop were determining the project’s scope, establishing a baseline for methane and carbon emissions at selected operation sites, collecting relevant data, and providing insights into NNPC Ltd.’s operations and expectations for Deloitte consultants.
For the pilot stage of the project, participants unanimously selected OML 34, located onshore in the Western Niger Delta, with the Utorogu and Ughelli Fields designated as the operation sites.
Representatives from NNPC Ltd.’s subsidiaries and departments, including Exploration & Production, New Energy, Gas Infrastructure, Health, Safety, and Environment, along with participants from federal government agencies like the National Council on Climate Change, were actively engaged in the workshop.
The project is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources, Energy, and Mineral Governance Programme (EMGP), signalling a collaborative effort to address environmental concerns and contribute to global sustainability.
