A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Minna, on Monday sentenced Insp. Audu Kaji of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to two years imprisonment for cheating.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of N20,000 fine.

Kaji was found guilty of extorting N293,000 from two applicants seeking job with the corps.

The accused was said to have extorted N145,000 and N148,000 from Latifat Sarakat and Jummai Umar respectively on the pretext of securing employment for them with the corps.

The offence was contrary to section 322 of the penal code.

The complainants had filed a complaint on April 11, alleging that the accused had demanded N300, 000 each from them with the promise of securing NSCDC job placements for them.

They said they were able to to offer him only N145,000 and N148,000 respectively.

They said the convict failed to secure the jobs and also refused to refund the money he collected from them.

When the charges were read to the convict he pleaded guilty and asked for leniency.

In his ruling, Magistrate Hassan Mohammed sentenced Kaji and also ordered the convict to refund the money he extorted from the complainants.

The Magistrate added that both parties were at liberty to appeal if not satisfied with the judgment.(NAN
