The Ogun Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday commenced a two-day forensic evaluation of its arms-bearing personnel.
The state NSCDC commandant, Mr. Kolawole Taiwo, said at the opening session of the exercise in Abeokuta that the assessment involved 500 arms-bearing personnel in various units and departments in Ogun.
Taiwo stated that the measure was in conformity with the directive of the Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, as part of efforts to reposition the corps and move it to an enviable height.
He explained that the evaluation had become necessary to ensure that the personnel bearing arms were emotionally balanced, stable and intelligent in their engagement with the public.
He added that the exercise involved series of lectures and psychological profiling of the personnel to know their mental balance or otherwise.
The commandant assured that any of the personnel who failed to measure up to standard would be relieved of his or her duty and deployed to another department after retraining.
According to Taiwo, only tested personnel with sound and normal brains and psyche are usually allowed by the command to bear arms because of the sensitive nature of such responsibility.
Muyideen Abimbola, an Assistant Superintendent of Corps (ASC), who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) commended the command for the programme.
Abimbola noted that the programme, which was the third edition, had continued to instill sense of maturity in the personnel.
”In this command, we have never recorded any incident of accidental discharge or any personnel misusing arms unjustly,” he said.(NAN)
