OAU VC congratulates basketball teams for WAUG championship victory

Ile-Ife (Osun), Dec. 20, 2023 (NAN) The Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has congratulated the male and female basketball teams of the institution for winning gold at the ongoing West African Universities Games (WAUG) Championships.

Bamire congratulated the teams after they defeated their opponents at the final of the basketball competition on Wednesday in OAU, Ile-Ife.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that OAU male basketball team defeated the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, by 19 to 14 points.

Their female counterparts also defeated the Bayero University Kano team in the final match by 16 points to 12.

Bamire commended the teams for their display of team spirit during the competition.

” We thanked God for this victory.

” The team played well, but the spirit of sportsmanship is what we are proud of here”, he said.

Also, the Captain, OAU female basketball team, Ifeoluwa Egbetunde, commended the management of the university for their support for the team during the competition.

Egbetunde said the commitment of the team members earned them the victory.

The captain of male basketball team, Paul Apata, said he was happy with the final results of the competition.

Apata said that the team’s hard work and discipline gave them the victory.

Kehinde Aderohunmu, the OAU Basketball coach, said the game was tough, but God gave them the victory.

Aderohunmu commended the OAU management for their support.

NAN reports that the WAUG Championship started on Dec. 15 and will be closing on Dec. 22.

Ahletes from 20 universities in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal are participating at the games.

Events being competed for at the games include table tennis, athletics, tennis and basketball

WAUG, also known as the ECOWAS Students Games, is a multi-sport event between student-athletes from West African universities.

The first edition of the competition was held in 1965 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier university. (NAN)
