The Chief Judge of Ogun, Mrs Olatunkunbo Olopade, on Wednesday released 51 awaiting trial inmates from five prisons in the state.

The inmates were released from Abeokuta, Oba, Ilaro, Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu prisons.

Olopade said that those released had spent between three to five years in custody without trial.

She expressed disappointment that the case files of some of them could not be found.

“The judiciary is to work harder to ensure that old cases are quickly dispensed, especially with those of 2010 and 2011 which files are yet to be treated.

“Already, those old cases that had been identified would be sought after and dispense with in due time.

“By October this year, all old cases would have been done away with, the magistrates and the Directorate of Public Prosecution is working toward that,’’ she said

She, thereafter, urged the released inmates to be of good character and avoid any act capable of returning them to the prison.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the offences of those released ranged from armed robbery, house breaking and entry, among others.

Also speaking, the Comptroller of Prison in Ogun, Mr Adam Babatunde, commended the chief judge for the initiative, assuring that the prison service would continue to collaborate with the judiciary.
