The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), on Thursday, said it has apprehended five persons for operating illegal premises in prohibited markets in Kano state.

The council’s Head of Enforcement, Suleiman Chiroma made this known in a statement in Kano.

Chiroma said the arrests were made during enforcement operation in Dalan Gyada and Kurmi Markets.

According to him, three were arrested for breaking PCN seals earlier placed on their illegal pharmaceutical outlets, while two others were arrested for operating illegal premises.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dalan Gyada and Kurmi Markets remain prohibited locations for the sale of medicines.

The enforcement team head, further said, breaking official seals, reopening sealed premises, or operating pharmaceutical businesses without PCN approval are grave violations of the PCN (Establishment) Act 2022.

“Let me state unequivocally: PCN will enforce all breaches of the law by any premises, whether legal or illegal, anywhere in Nigeria.

“The offenders will be arraigned before the Federal High Court for prosecution as provided by law. The PCN Legal Team is on ground to ensure that the legal process is duly completed”.

He advised the public to purchase medicines only from PCN-licensed and properly regulated facilities where product quality, safety, and professional oversight are guaranteed.

“PCN remains resolute and will continue to work with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to rid Nigeria of unwholesome pharmaceutical practices.

“We urge all practitioners and members of the public to cooperate with PCN in the interest of public health,” Chiroma said. (NAN)
