Lagos, Sept. 16, 2025 (NAN) A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Adelaja Adeoye, has called on South West states to make learning of Yoruba history and language compulsory in public schools in the zone.
Adeoye made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said that the South West and other Yoruba-speaking states must preserve Yoruba history and language through education.
Adeoye urged the region to make concerted effort to protect Yoruba language and history from extinction.
“There is no better time than now when people are distorting the history of the Yorubas.
“Our governments in the South-West zone and other Yoruba-speaking states must make our history and language compulsory subjects in schools from the basic classes to secondary level.
“Our children must internalise our history, tradition, and culture for proper education and for the sake of the future, “he said.
Adeoye said the move would broaden the minds of students and would sustain the Yoruba tradition and heritage.
“The teaching of Yoruba history will help us preserve our indigenous values and beliefs and make our people become cultural ambassadors wherever they find themselves across the globe.
“We now live in a time where our history is being distorted.
“In this era of Artificial Intelligence, where the generation is shifting quickly, we must do everything to preserve our history and language.”he said
The PDP chieftain said teaching and learning of Yoruba in schools would also help to preserve the Yoruba value system.
“The ethos and spirit of the ‘Omoluabi’ (good character) should not depart from our people.
“Our children must be able to sustain our heritage when they know their history, and no outsider can falsely write their stories for them,” he said. (NAN)
