The Police Command in Lagos State on Monday arraigned a 40-year-old artisan before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a generator coil.
The defendant, Mustapha Dauda, is standing trial before Magistrate Lateef Layeni on a two-count charge of conversion and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor, ASP Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 10, 2024 at Ajangbadi, Ojo.
He alleged that the defendant stole a generator coil belonging to a customer, Mr Adesanya Akolawole, who had entrusted it to him for repairs.
According to the prosecutor, the complainant paid N60,000, yet the generator still failed to function properly after it was returned.
“The complainant later discovered that his original coil had been removed and replaced with a faulty one,” Uche said.
He added that when the complainant returned the generator for rectification, the defendant gave excuses and eventually absconded with it since 2024.
“Dauda was later apprehended in April, and the matter was reported to the police,” he said.
The offences contravene Sections 280 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned until May 21 for hearing. (NAN)
