President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that the destabilization of Chad Republic would have direct implications for the continued peace and stability of the country, the Lake Chad region and the wider Sahel Region.

President Buhari who gave the warning today while speaking at the opening of the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in Abuja, called on the international community to support Chad in its transition process from military to democratic rule within 18 months.

The President also used the occasion to commend the untiring efforts of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the Multinational Joint Task Force, member countries’ National Armed Forces and Security and Intelligence Agencies pledging that officers, some of whom have paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty for the survival of the region, will never be forgotten.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, on his part, said the need for sustainable peace and security in the region propelled the convening of the extraordinary meeting and to discuss the recent developments in Chad after President Idris Deby Itno’s death.
